Another exciting new publication utilizing Blackbox, this one from the Twiss Lab at the University of South Carolina.

Blackbox enabled quantitative assessment of functional recovery following peripheral nerve injury, helping demonstrate that inhibition of an axon-intrinsic REG3A–KHSRP signaling pathway accelerates nerve regeneration and restores hindlimb function.

This demonstrates Blackbox’s ability to translate complex biological mechanisms into objective, quantitative measures of functional recovery in vivo—bridging molecular findings with meaningful preclinical outcomes.

We’re excited to announce two new leadership appointments at Blackbox!

Congrats to our new CEO, Ryan Sadlo and new CSO, Zihe Zhang.

A life science executive and entrepreneur, Ryan has extensive experience bringing innovative, life-changing technologies from the lab to broad adoption. Under Ryan’s leadership, Blackbox supports over 100 laboratories and thousands of users worldwide. Prior to Blackbox, Ryan was the first employee and VP of Commercialization at Podimetrics, an MIT spinout focused on improving outcomes for patients with diabetes. Ryan began his career as a naval architect after earning a BS from Webb Institute, and later received his MBA from Rice University. Ryan’s focus is empowering researchers to accelerate the development of novel therapies and improve patient outcomes by leveraging the world’s most advanced in vivo platform.

Dr. Zhang is a neuroscientist with expertise in AI-driven behavioral analysis. He earned his PhD in Neuroscience from Harvard University in 2023, where he leveraged advanced AI and machine learning techniques to investigate behavioral changes associated with neurological conditions such as chronic pain. As a co-inventor of Blackbox Bio’s core technology, his doctoral research provided the intellectual and scientific foundation for the company. In his new role, he will lead the vision of Blackbox’s behavioral analysis platform.

We just wrapped up our 3rd Orthopaedic Research Society Conference, and it did not disappoint!

Incredible to see 3X the number of posters compared to last year using Blackbox to characterize a variety of orthopedic models. We also debuted our new gait analysis and automated behavioral scoring features.

Great team bonding highlighted by Zihe Zhang and Phelan Traylor culinary skills (appreciated by Shawn Pavey and me).

See you next year in SF!

Congrats to Jarret Weinrich, Nesa Milan Aboubacar Wague, Xuhui Liu, Brian Feeley and team on this fantastic publication. This was among the earliest commercial Blackbox data gathered, and we’re delighted to see it hit the press.

With Orthopaedic Research Society’s annual meeting later this week, this is perfect timing to highlight how Blackbox can be leveraged in orthopedic preclinical models to translate into meaningful and impactful outcomes.

Come say hello to us at #SFN2025 in San Diego starting this Saturday (11/15). You’ll find us at Booth #3301.

This year, we have some major updates to share…

First, we’re dropping two new major feature updates to our Palmreader software.

Gait Analysis - Users will now be able to generate a suite of gait-specific metrics, including stride length, stride width, duty factor, spatial & temporal symmetry, and velocity. Unlike other gait assays, no animal training is required.

Automated Behavioral Scoring - Palmreader now detects and reports when animals rear, groom, scratch, lick, and ambulate. This is a major step forward in analyzing rodent behavior, and we’re already working on adding new behaviors in early 2026.

Next, we’re unveiling the Blackbox Two, which is now available to order. This instrument has been under development for nearly two years. We’ll share more about its new capabilities soon, but we’re thrilled to introduce this powerful machine that will be the platform for all future hardware development.
